Rob Burns Surf ’s Up Surf, sea and sunsets are all you need for “Living Large” in Koko Kai Local boy Rob Burns had no idea when he starting shaping his first surfboard on his lanai in Kailua that he would eventually become one of Hawaii’s shining stars in business. At the age of 15, Rob began making his own surfboards out of necessity but by the time he was 20, he was one of the top surfboard shapers in the world. Mentored by ’Pipeline Master” Gerry Lopez, Rob began shaping for Lightning Bolt which was supplying the surfboards for the best surfers on the planet. Then one night he had a dream and with $25 in hand and a $3,000 loan from his uncle, Rob started LOCALMOTION . The inventory was thin, 5 surfboards, 2 dozen shorts, 3 dozen T-shirts, a box of wax and a couple of cans of resin. When he sold his company in 1991 at the ripe age of 40, his back yard hobby had mushroomed into a $20+ million dollar a year business. “I remember the day I signed the papers to sell LOCAL MOTION , I went to check out the surf at Bowls and there sat a bum under a coconut tree enjoying the surroundings. I thought, wow all these years I’ve been working to do what this guy has been doing every day, I had to laugh”. As I drove away I said “go get um bruddah” and he smiled, and so did I. Rob had begun an interest in real estate after becoming bored of playing every day and began his next chapter in life as a real estate associate. Being well known from founding LOCAL MOTION he quickly became part of the Top 1% of realtors on the island of Oahu.
