Pacific Luxury Living | 37 Featured Properties Richard A. Oliver Jr. ~ This Kukio home makes the most of the Hawaiian lifestyle by including outdoor baths. Three detached pods feature outdoor baths exclusively. The stunning craftsman- ship includes bamboo shaped bronze faucets, a basalt trough style sink supported by a mahogany stand, and a copper framed mirror. Enjoy the freedom of the outdoors with a shower that rains down through a sunflower shower head; feel like you’re on the beach with lava-paved basalt floors; and use the facilities in a tasteful and private water closet positioned behind the sink. The master bath does include indoor facilities, however, and employs luxurious materials. Coral stone shower and walls, mahogany cabinetry, basalt sink and tiles, Toto toilets, Spanish cedar doors, and honey colored hand-plastered walls all lead to an outdoor shower; because there should always be the option to step outside and soak in the paradise. Basin or infinity sinks break from visual tradition and add another element of individuality. In true Hawaiian style, the outdoor bath is the quintessen- tial space to make your own. Focus less on added decor, and more on incorporating nature while protecting the fixtures from it. What better way to incorporate the island life into your home than to engage with the outdoors. One example is Richard A. Oliver Jr.’s Kukio home. The three pods on the home defy tradition and include only exterior baths. An open shower on lava-paved basalt floors rains down through a sunflower shower head and the facilities are tucked away in a private water closet; simple, yet soothing and with superior details. No matter which interior custom features you choose to include in your bed or bath, in Hawaii, it’s also about how you interact with your environment; be it through seamless windows, skylights, or accessible lanais. And regardless of what your inner child dreams up for the design - it can be done. There are skilled designers, builders, and craftsmen out there waiting for a extraordinary project to test their abilities and create a one of a kind space. Invest some extra time and effort into a custom bed or bath that you will be thrilled to come home to every night. You will be glad you did. Debra Merle & Cathryn Y. Paxton-Haines ~ Renovated to sell two years ago, the homeowner prepared this custom bath to appeal to new buyers. With a jacuzzi tub, shower with a bench and dual showerheads, there are plenty of soaking or bathing options. High-end materials are on display with granite countertops, and tumbled marble in the shower and on the tub surround. Three decorative glass panels create a boundary for the shower and double sinks allow for plenty of space. For ample storage space the homeowner installed cabinets, a spacious linen closet, and two medicine cabinets. To create more visual space there is an unexpected vaulted cieling with recessed lighting and two windows to let the outdoors in to this high-end tasteful custom bath. (See Page 21)
