Pacific Luxury Living | 47 Interior Design Eclectic Design of Historical Importance Charles Black, Furniture Plus Design A native-born kama’aina, Charles Black has more than 40 years of experience as a local interior designer. He founded Charles Black Associates (CBA) in 1966, which quickly grew to be one of the largest and most successful interior design firms in Hawaii. With a passion for outdoor rooms, he also established the first Lanai shop in Hawaii which is still operating in full force. Today, Charles continues to provide award-winning interior design services for Residential and Commercial clients alike, specializing in high-end homes, restaurants and offices. Because he was born, raised, and established his business in Hawaii, the state’s international influences have helped shape his unique design style. “I work with people who have diverse backgrounds and I want them to express that,” says Charles. Although he ultimately designs for the interest and aesthetics of the client, his eclectic style is a combination of Victorian and the Oriental antiques he was raised with. Charles was the founding president of the Historic Hawaii Foundation, a statewide preservation organization. He is currently active in many local community service organizations, including the Metropolitan Rotary Club of Honolulu and the Mission Houses Museum. CBA projects in Hawaii and abroad have garnered international acclaim, won many prestigious awards and have been published in numerous national magazines. Charles has been recognized by his peers for his community service contributions and by the ASID for his outstanding residential spaces.
