This new custom home was designed for a homeowner by the team at Long & Associates. With a contemporary, clean design aesthetic this two-story home embodies the careful manipulation of water and light. The design intent is to create a structure that is strongly tied to the natural environment, maximizes the view opportunities of Maunalua Bay, while minimizing the noise from the adjacent highway. A traditional Japanese genkan style entrance leads down a long gallery with skylights overhead to create an architectural solar calendar that visually trace the sun’s path over the course of the year, from solstice to solstice. Once inside this unique entry, the home is a sheltered oasis, with a lush interior courtyard featuring a water wall that gently cascades into a reflection pool, to reduce noise pollution. Unlike any other, this unique home could only be realized when built on a clean slate.
