Kiholo Bay is a marvel of untouched nature where John Paul DeJoria’s solar-powered sanctuary stands as one of only a handful of homes. Designed in the traditional Balinese style, the estate is organized as a rhythmic series of independent pavilions. These structures are thoughtfully arranged in a compound layout, woven together by a network of open-air decks and sheltered walkways. Originally built in Bali by 280 master craftsmen using rare Indonesian ironwood and teak, the structure was dismantled, shipped, and reassembled in Hawaii using traditional wooden pegs. Its most striking feature is a massive roof of 1.3 million wooden shingles, meticulously laid to resemble dragon skin. The interior serves as a living museum, blending Southeast Asian history with the Hawaiian environment. At its center, a 20-step ironwood staircase ascends to a Balinese god statue, while glass panels depicting Hindu legends glow into the night. Living spaces are adorned with intricate Indonesian carvings, while sliding doors vanish to invite the Pacific breeze. Following traditional practices, the kitchen occupies its own circular pavilion, designed specifically to promote natural airflow and effortless outdoor entertaining. The retreat’s three bedrooms include an expansive, direct ocean primary pavilion. From this vantage point, sliding walls reveal a breathtaking 180-degree panorama, where the deep blues of the Pacific transition seamlessly into the rising silhouettes of the Kohala Mountains. Completely self-sustaining with its own water and solar systems, the estate is more than a luxury residence; it is a resilient cultural masterpiece that harmonizes the spiritual soul of Bali with the wild majesty of the Big Island.
